What have career expo’s got to do with digital tech?

Apparently there were no pens left by lunchtime.

Last week, the IT Professionals Nelson branch hit the ground running at the local careers expo! But why exactly are these events so important for our industry? Let's face it, digital technology careers don't always have the "cool factor" compared to some other fields. Remember that report from TEC on the jobs children aspire to hold where IT (general term) ranked 45th, behind sportsperson at #1, teacher at #4, fast food worker at #26 and retail assistant at #38.

Yet, the reality is, it's a dynamic and ever-evolving industry brimming with exciting possibilities. While old fashioned a careers expo offered a fantastic opportunity to shatter these stereotypes and open young minds – not just those already knee-deep in coding – to the vast landscape of digital technology careers. There you will meet students from all backgrounds, many surprised by the sheer variety of roles within digital tech discovering there so much more than just programmers!

But it isn’t just about showcasing the "what" of IT careers. What truly energises us is the opportunity to connect with these young minds, hear their questions, and understand what's important to them. Their fresh perspectives and genuine curiosity are a breath of fresh air. By engaging with them, we can help shape the future of our industry – a future that reflects their values and aspirations.

Unfortunately, with career advisors being a thing of the past in some high schools, and many not entirely familiar with the nuances of our ever-evolving industry, it can be tough for young people to discover the vast array of tech careers available. Let's be honest, tech can be a complex beast for those on the outside looking in. Schools themselves are often bombarded with uncoordinated career talks across various fields, so it's crucial we channel our enthusiasm into well-organised and targeted events like the careers expo. This allows us to directly connect with students, answer their specific questions, and showcase the true breadth and excitement of what the digital technology industry has to offer.

So, the next time a careers expo rolls around, don't underestimate its power. It's a chance to ignite a passion for tech in the next generation, dispel the myths, and build a future workforce that's diverse, skilled, and ready to tackle the exciting challenges ahead.

Thanks to Simon Gutschlag for arranging our presence.
