ITP submission on Vocational Education and Training targeted consultation

The government is once again reviewing the structure of work-based learning, and this consultation could have significant implications for the digital technology sector. As an industry that underpins every part of the economy, digital technology needs to be treated both as a distinct sector with specialised skills development needs and as a critical enabler for all industries.

Our submission - written jointly with TUANZ - emphasises the importance of industry-led workforce development, ensuring digital technology is not sidelined or bundled into unrelated sectors. We strongly advocate for flexible training pathways, such as cadetships, micro-credentials, and employer-driven learning models, which better reflect how the tech sector actually hires and trains talent.

My key question: Will this reform future-proof our workforce, or will it force digital technology into a rigid system that doesn’t fit?
