Paul Haggath is, in his own words, "rubbish at small talk". He doesn't believe in the hard sell, and he doesn't have an elevator pitch. He has built several successful businesses and a career by networking.
Good networking is about connecting. It's not just what you know, it's who you know and how you maintain that relationship. And like any relationship, it should be built on give and take, mutual respect, and listening.
Your network includes everyone from friends and family to work colleagues and members of groups to which you belong - people who you can assist, and who can potentially help you in return. And unlike selling, networking is about helping everyone toward their goals.
We've all heard the old complaint - you can't get a job without experience, but you can't get experience without a job. Katie Haggath remembers looking for jobs as she prepared to leave uni and go out into the real world, and one ad in particular stood out. "ENTRY LEVEL JOB" it said… "university degree and 3+ years' experience required".
But it's not all bad news. Katie is here to tell you how she turned networking into valuable job experience, and more importantly, how you can too.
There's a school of thought that says networking is walking into a room and selling yourself. It's not. It's not about small talk either.

About The Speakers
Paul Haggath is, in his own words, "rubbish at small talk". He doesn't believe in the hard sell, and he doesn't have an elevator speech. He does believe in networking, harnessing the skills of every individual, and working as a diverse but cohesive team.
Paul enjoys working with good people on interesting and diverse projects and loves sharing his knowledge and experience. His mantra is "Share your knowledge, don't protect it."
This was his motivation for creating TEAM Projects Advisory, and for establishing the TEAM Mates - a collective of specialists working (and networking!) together to assist each other at key project milestones.
Katie has been Student Outreach Co-ordinator for TechCommNZ since 2016. She built her own business on a diverse network of contacts, and she relies on networking to find work experience opportunities for students in the comms and ICT industries.
In her day-to-day life, she's a communications consultant for her own company, Snappy Communication. She believes good communication, be it written or verbal, is about being human, real and open. You don't have to be an extrovert to do it, you just need to be you!
