Should we have specific New Zealand qualifications in Software Testing?

IT Professionals New Zealand and NZQA National Qualifications Serviceare co-leads for the development of all computing-related qualifications at levels 1-6 on the NZ Qualifications Framework. We have been asked to consider creating separate NZ qualifications in Cyber-Security and Testing, possibly at Level 6 on the Framework. The first steps are to ascertain whether there is sufficient industry demand and need, and get an idea of the scope of these qualifications if they were developed.

To this end we are holding workshop-style discussions in Auckland and Wellington in early March to input into this process. This workshop is for the Software Testing diploma.

We will attempt to determine:

  1. Whether there is a genuine industry need for standalone qualifications in the software testing area, and what evidence there is.
    • Is there a lack of qualification options currently?  What's already available and what gaps are there?
    • Would employers employ graduates with these qualifications, if developed?  If so, for what sort of job roles and how do they currently fill these roles?
    • Who would the qualifications be targeted at, and for what job roles?
    • Is there a need for standalone qualifications, as opposed to content in other qualifications?
    • How would these fit into the current suite of IT qualifications?  Is NZQA Level 6 the appropriate level? If not, what is?
  2. What would need to be covered in these qualifications for them to be useful for industry (at a high level); and
  3. Are tertiary providers interested in providing these qualifications if they were developed?

We need your help! We're calling for experts and employers in software testing areas to come together and provide input into the above. The intention is to keep discussion at a fairly high level, with the result then going to a broader industry survey-style consultation ahead of possible development.

There are very limited places, so we ask that only one person from each organisation attend each workshop - although please contact us if you believe it necessary or appropriate for others to attend (this requirement can be waived for larger teams). If you are unable to attend the round-table discussion, there will be further opportunities to input into the process.
