Git 101 | Introduction to Git (Student Event)

Git is software for tracking changes in any set of files. It’s a very useful and essential tool for developers to keep track of the work they have done, and collaborate on code without having to work on the same machine.

This session will cover the basics of Git. We will go through what it is, why we would and should use it, and how to get started!

No prior experience is required. You'll just need to know how to change some text files and have the following installed on your computer:

• https://gitforwindows.org/ - WINDOWS, includes Git Bash for terminal commands.
• https://git-scm.com/download/mac - MAC, use mac Terminal for commands.
• https://git-scm.com/download/linux - LINUX, use Terminal for commands.
• https://desktop.github.com/ - GITHUB DESKTOP if you do not want to use terminal, not available on linux.

Speaker Bio 

Lena Plaksina is a software engineer, with over 9 years of industry experience in Wellington tech companies. In the years since her internship, she has presented at local and international conferences, co-facilitated and coached at workshops, and volunteered at Summer of Tech. Lena is passionate about knowledge-sharing and community in the tech industry.
