Gaining a comprehensive knowledge of an organisation's architecture is an essential Enterprise Architecture step.

This means that the business architecture must be well modelled and, very importantly, that those models be understood and accepted by the Business. Formal modelling languages for doing this, such as ArchiMate, are not always easily understood by business people. To resolve this issue Business Element Models were developed.

The Business Element Model (BEM) was developed in the 90's for the Ministry of Fisheries as an education aid for participants during a major review of new legislation. Since that time BEMs have been developed for a number of diverse Government Agencies and comprehensively in the Education Sector.

They have proved invaluable for education and communication and as a basis for developing Enterprise Architecture target states.

A BEM is a single page diagram which shows the functional areas, functions, data, roles and specific organisations with their interactions and flows. BEMs can be drawn for a whole organisation or, in detail, for a business unit.

Recent research has concluded that (re)developments should not start with the current state, as this can badly cloud thinking, but with a functional decomposition. A BEM is effectively a massively enhanced functional decomposition that extends to roles, flows and data.

Important as BEM's are, it is very necessary to see them in the Enterprise Architecture context. As a consequence, this seminar also covers the basics of the TOGAF ADM together with the Business Architecture Reference Model. It also discusses the nature of GEA-NZ and the Government's global approach to Business Architecture.

This workshop covers Business Architecture at a level of detail to set you on the way to mapping the architecture of your organisation.

John Fisher CITP, MIITP, MBCS, Ministry of Education/GCIO, Enterprise Architect

John has been involved in IT for over 50 years and in the early days worked exclusively on OLTP and database based systems starting with the original airline reservation systems in the '60s. 

Over the last 15 or so years he has focused largely on the areas of information architecture and knowledge systems and was responsible for defining the Ministry of Education's Information Architecture. This was followed by involvement in developing target states and roadmaps for the Education Sector based on high level sector Business Element Models.

A year ago he was seconded to GCIO to work on an All-of-Government Business Architecture. This is in its final stages and is about to be presented for cross Agency review.

This experience has been enhanced with involvement in lecturing on a post graduate course on Enterprise Architecture at Victoria University

Interests outside work include Railway Modelling (GWR) and Cowboy Action Shooting.
