IITP presents the next in the IITP National Series presentations in Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch, Hamilton and Dunedin:

ICT in Earthquake recovery

The Canterbury Earthquake Recovery Authority (CERA) was established in April 2011. How do you set up a brand new government agency's information services from scratch, under intense pressure, and in an unpredictable and changing environment? What have we learned from doing so? CERA has leveraged a range of government shared services, software as a service, and cloud computing approaches. How did we use agile and lean startup principles to achieve this?

To coordinate the recovery, CERA has had to aggregate data and information from central and local government agencies, and from the private sector.  How have we maximised the benefits of external data sharing, while managing commercial sensitivity, confidentiality, and privacy?

CERA Establishment CIO Julian Carver will discuss these questions and more, and explore how central and local government agencies, and the private sector can leverage lessons learned from the earthquake recovery.

Refreshments included.

About the Speaker:

For the last eight years Julian Carver has led cross agency data & information sharing strategies and shared services projects across central and local government agencies, the research sector, private sector and NGOs.

He is also involved in open government and open data initiatives, chairing conferences, and acting as spokesperson to government for Open NZ (an organisation representing the open data community). In 2011 Julian worked with the Government Data and Information Reuse Secretariat to develop New Zealand's Declaration on Open and Transparent Government.

From April 2011 - June 2012 Julian established the information services function at the Canterbury Earthquake Recovery Authority as acting Chief Information Officer.
