Destover, Shamoon and Stuxnet are examples of sophisticated malware that are, or are suspected to be state-sponsored. Not only did they form part of cyber operations that exfiltrated sensitive information from the target, but they also created effects in the physical world by destroying equipment and erasing critical data. What motivates nation states to conduct cyber attacks such as these? What can you do to protect yourself and your business and why are these attacks relevant to NZ?

Jeremy Jones is a former Offensive Cyber Operations Officer in the UK Ministry of Defence, specialising in delivering cyber effects on military operations. In this session he will reflect on certain historical cyber operations, what motivates nation states and organisations to conduct cyber attacks, and how this relates to the security advice that we see today.

After the meeting you will have the chance to network with Jeremy and peers from the IT industry over some drinks (alcoholic drinks available from the bar) and nibbles.

About The Speaker

Jeremy has over sixteen years' experience in multilateral government and military environments, influencing and implementing information security strategies. He has defended some of the most advanced and secure networks in the world and participated in cyber security initiatives and operations at the highest level.

His broad experience enables understanding of the strategic business context, and how to distil complex concepts for non-technical people. He is constantly curious about the technology, human factors and innovation that shape cyber security.

Jeremy provides strategic cyber security advice from board level down. He is a Chartered Engineer with the Institute of Engineering and Technology in London, a Certified Ethical Hacker, trained by US Cyber Command (and others) in cyber warfare and is highly experienced in cyber targeting and intelligence operations in support of UK security objectives. In his current role as Head of Cyber Security at Theta he works with customers to enhance prosperity through better understanding and mitigation of cyber risk in all its forms.
