In this information age, data and data relationships have never been more important to, well, just about everything. How much money is in your account? What platform does the train leave from? What is Barack Obama tweeting in Twitter? The answer to all of these questions is in the data and data relationships.
The ability to model data is an essential skill, whether it be for understanding key relationships in your organisation, modelling entity relationships as a basis for relational database design, or modelling object classes for software implementation.
It is very common for apparently well designed systems to start to fail when the information demands of Users exceeds the ability of the system to prove the requisite data. Worse still, often systems can't easily accommodate changes in requirements brought about by changes in the business environment or through User's increased appreciation of their needs gained from system experience. Comprehensive data modelling mitigates these failings.
This course provides a succinct and pragmatic coverage of data modelling for anyone involved in information management and related projects. The course is highly practical and involves group and individual exercises based on real world examples.
The Data Modelling Essentials' course is delivered by John Fisher. John is a well known and very experienced data modeller and has undertaken data modelling for many key New Zealand organisations. He is currently enterprise modeller and de facto information architect at a major Government Ministry.
